Dr Metuamate is from Ngati Kauwhata, Ngati Raukawa ki te Tonga, and Ngati Haua, and Mangaia. He is the inaugural Chief Executive of Te Kupenga, and has worked in university colleges and the public service in both New Zealand and Australia. For almost a decade, Dr Metuamate was a member of Te Runanga Katorika and he is a proud old boy of Hato Paora College in Feilding.
Dr Metuamate is a member of a number of boards related to education, including the Board of Independent Tertiary Education (ITENZ) and Ako Matatupu Teach First NZ. He is also a Trustee of the Raukawa ki te Tonga Trust.
