The NZ Catholic Bishops are committed to fostering a culture of safeguarding in the Church. All of us, as a Catholic community, have a responsibility to:
- value all people and protect them from harm
- create environments where people are welcome and safe.
This course is specifically for all those involved in ministry in the Catholic Church, whether in a paid or voluntary role. The course was written by the National Office for Professional Standards. Te Kupenga – Catholic Theological College teaches this course in partnership with the National Office for Professional Standards.
Accessible throughout Aotearoa
The Safeguarding course is online. This means no matter where you live in New Zealand, if you have access to the internet, you can study this course.
What is the course about?
The course consists of three modules.
Module 1: Knowledge – Wānanga
This module explores the basis for safeguarding; what has led to the need to identify this aspect of our faith, our Church’s expectations around safeguarding and those of our country’s legal requirements.
The intention is to provide you with a comprehensive overview that will support the context for this course.
Module 2: Understanding – Māramatanga
This module builds on from Module 1, to take a closer look at the types and impacts of abuse, some causes of abuse and pastoral response to abuse.
This is intended to expand your understanding from our Church’s perspective.
Module 3: Application – Pukapuka Tono
This module brings together learning from Modules 1 and 2 with the intention of applying that knowledge in all aspects of ministry in the Church.
The application of that learning sits within the five Standards for Creating and Maintaining a Safeguarding Culture. You are invited to explore how these relate to your particular situation and to those for whom you may have a responsibility.
