Statement from the National Office of Professional Standards (NOPS)
“The National Office of Professional Standards (NOPS) is currently doing a review of the Safeguarding Course with the intention of producing an updated version of the course to be made available no earlier than June 2023.   NOPS has partnered with the Te Kupenga – Catholic Theological College in delivering the course for the whole of New Zealand.  We will inform the public once the review is finalised and when the new version would be available for enrolment.”

The NZ Catholic Bishops are committed to fostering a culture of safeguarding in the Church. All of us, as a Catholic community, have a responsibility to:

  • value all people and protect them from harm
  • create environments where people are welcome and safe.

This course is specifically for all those involved in ministry in the Catholic Church, whether in a paid or voluntary role. The course was written by the National Office for Professional Standards. Te Kupenga – Catholic Theological College teaches this course in partnership with the National Office for Professional Standards.

 

Accessible throughout Aotearoa

The Safeguarding course is online. This means no matter where you live in New Zealand, if you have access to the internet, you can study this course.

​What is the course about?

The course consists of two modules.

  • Module 1: Safeguarding Practices

This module establishes the foundations for developing a culture of safeguarding in the Catholic Church in Aotearoa. It focuses on:

  • Scripture
  • Theology
  • Our legal requirements
  • vulnerability
  • impact of abuse and neglect
  • our responses to abuse

To be successful, safeguarding requires strong leadership and an engaged approach by the community.

  • Module 2: Safeguarding Standards

In the second module, each of the Safeguarding Standards is examined with emphasis on their interconnectedness.

This module invites a critique of current practices in light of the Safeguarding Standards from both a personal and community perspective.

​How much work will I need to do?

  • The online course runs for 3 months.
  • You will study part-time.
  • It is recommended that you commit around 15 minutes a day to this study.

What are the entry requirements?

Students need to be over 17 years old and have access to a computer and the internet.

How much will it cost?

The fee for this course is $150

The next course is scheduled for the 1st of next month.
